Enjoy the amazing attractions of Elgin, Austin,
and the Lost Pines region of Texas!

Austin, the Capital City
Austin - This hip and trendy Texas city thrives on a blend of influences -- music, commerce, and history. This is the home of the state capitol, a stunning building that's well worth the tour. In Austin you'll also find a booming live music scene, a vibrant business district, excellent shopping, and all the quirkiness of a college town. Take a tour through the Warehouse District and Sixth Street for incredible live blues, Latin jazz, country, and Western swing music, then visit one of the many art museums or enjoy a picnic in Zilker Park. You'll find all types of cuisine in Austin, from barbecue to Tex-Mex, French, and other international flavors. This is the home of the Texas State History Museum, the University of Texas at Austin, and the LBJ Presidential Library.

The Lost Pines Region
Lost Pines - To the east of Elgin and Bastrop Texas you'll find a unique area that's known as the Lost Pines Region. With its dappled forests and the waters of the Colorado River, this area is known for its outdoor activities, historic towns, and lovely painted churches. Named for a grouping of loblolly pines, this forested area presents something of an ecological mystery. No one understands why this isolated forest should exist here, about eighty miles west of the East Texas piney woods. Whether they're the result of glacier activity from a wetter age or something caused by humankind, nothing alters the fact that this forest is an amazing place to explore by foot (on the Independence Trail), horseback, or car.

Elgin Depot Museum
Elgin Depot Museum - Transportation has always been linked with the city of Elgin's development. When Elgin was founded in 1872, it was named after Robert Morris Elgin, the commissioner of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. Luck and good fortune also played a role, since it was the Colorado River floods of 1869 that brought the rail lines through this area instead of McDade, ten miles to the east. Learn about these quirks of history and much more at Elgin's historic Depot Museum, located at Depot Square on Main & Depot. Tour the photography collection and the archives, then stop in the gift shop to pick up a book on the history of this fair city. The museum is open Tuesdays - Sundays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (closed some holidays).

Bastrop County Museum
Bastrop County Museum - Once a frontier colony on the Old San Antonio Road, the charming town of Bastrop is a delightful place to visit. Take a tour of the Bastrop County Museum to see vintage newspapers, a model of the ferry that used to transport people across the Colorado River, and other artifacts from the days of the early settlers. See the arrowhead collection, the Confederate weapons, and an early saddle. There's even a mastodon skull that's between nine and twenty million years old! You can view an operating table that was used by the local doctor in the late 1800s, lacy white christening dresses, and a military uniform that was donated by a Bastrop WWII veteran.
